The sacred bond of Vajrabodhi spans past lives,
Connecting to the Tang Dynasty of the Eastern Land.
The supreme Vajra Mahāyāna esoteric teachings,
Cross oceans and tempestuous waves over thousands of miles.
Empowerment for emperors and generals alike,
Bestowed in golden palaces and imperial halls.
All Dharma converges in the heart,
Under the flourishing era of Kaiyuan, admired by all nations!

Vajrabodhi (669–741), the third prince of King Īśānavarman of Central India, is a critical figure in the history of Sino Esoteric Buddhism. At the age of ten, he entered Nālandā Monastery and became a disciple of Nāgabodhi Bodhisattva. There, he mastered Mahāyāna scriptures, the Five Sciences, and received the fivefold esoteric empowerments. Proficient in both exoteric and esoteric teachings, Vajrabodhi attained unparalleled wisdom. One day, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva appeared to him in a vision and instructed:

“You have already accomplished your studies. Your karmic bond with the Tang Dynasty is profound—hasten there to transmit the Tathāgata’s esoteric teachings, to benefit both heavens and earth, and to liberate sentient beings.”

In 719 CE (Kaiyuan Year 8), Vajrabodhi, accompanied by his disciple Amoghavajra, embarked on a maritime journey to the Tang capital of Chang’an. There, he introduced the teachings of the Vajradhātu Mandala and was honored by Emperor Xuanzong as the State Preceptor.

This artwork vividly captures Vajrabodhi’s extraordinary journey to China. At the center of the composition, Vajrabodhi’s Dharma body ascends above the sea, transformed into towering, lotus-shaped waves. Holding a Vajra in his right hand, Vajrabodhi symbolizes the unshakable power of wisdom and compassion. His figure radiates divine authority, harmonizing with the dramatic energy of the surrounding scene.

A celestial dragon emerges amidst the waves, summoning divine winds and turbulent waters, its powerful form embodying protection and vitality. Flanking Vajrabodhi, Acala and other Vajra protectors stand as steadfast guardians, ensuring the safe transmission of the Dharma. Behind him, Amoghavajra follows with serene dedication, carrying a jeweled scripture chest that signifies the sacred esoteric teachings.

Above this scene, heavenly goddesses scatter fragrant blossoms for sacred blessings, while birds of varied forms flock in reverent admiration, their intricate details symbolizing the universal resonance of Vajrabodhi’s mission.

Upon their arrival in Chang’an, the emperor, ministers, monastics, and citizens witnessed this awe-inspiring display of divine power. Moved by the extraordinary event, they knelt in reverence, welcoming Vajrabodhi and his compassionate mission to spread the Dharma.
This painting masterfully conveys the grandeur and sanctity of Vajrabodhi’s journey, blending dynamic motion with profound spiritual depth, making it a visual testament to the universal compassion and transformative power of the Dharma.
