Qizhenxinghai — Lineage Master of Sino Esoteric Buddhism

Qizhenxinghai — Lineage Master of Sino Esoteric Buddhism

During the late Tang Dynasty, Emperor Wuzong’s Great Anti-Buddhist Persecution severely weakened Buddhism across China. Many assumed that Sino Esoteric Buddhism had faded away during this period, but in reality, it retreated into remote mountains where its lineage continued through secret transmissions.

Master Qizhen Xinghai, one of the great achievers of Sino Esoteric Buddhism, is an enlightened master in this hidden lineage. In seclusion, he embodied the Dharmakāya and transmitted the profound teachings of Sino Esoteric Buddhism. His life was devoted to guiding sentient beings across both Dharma and worldly realms—those endowed with spiritual virtues, wisdom, and readiness to receive the teachings.

This painting captures Master Qizhen Xinghai in tranquil meditation amidst a secluded mountain setting. The composition reflects his unwavering dedication to the Dharma during a time of great adversity. His serene posture symbolizes the resilience of Sino Esoteric Buddhism and its enduring mission to liberate beings with karmic connections.

The composition skillfully integrates elements of the natural and spiritual worlds, symbolizing the continuation of the esoteric lineage during times of adversity. The leopard and hare in the foreground represent harmony between strength and gentleness, echoing the Buddhist principle of coexistence and balance. The vibrant brushstrokes of the foliage and mountains in the background create a sense of timelessness. Above the Master, celestial beings and auspicious symbols suggest divine guardianship and the spiritual energy that emanates from his meditative practice.
